Study: I Thessalonians 5:1-11 – “The Day of the Lord”

INTRODUCTION:

  1. The return of Jesus and the end of the world is a topic as controversial and misunderstood today as it was in the First Century.
  2. Non-believers then and now mostly reject the whole idea of a “doom’s day” – especially one brought about by a Jewish preacher who lived 2,000 years ago.
  3. But even in the Christian community there is a wide diversity of beliefs about His coming… from disbelief (liberal views) to fanatical fascination about end-time signs and predictions.
  4. Paul is addressing this subject and trying to clear up misconceptions and ignorance in his two letters to the Thessalonians.

Editorial: “Publish or Perish!”

“Publish or Perish” is an expression often heard in the academic community to describe the pressure many scholars and researchers feel. They are expected to submit articles, research results, and more to appropriate academic publications as part of advancing in their careers, achieving tenure, or perhaps justifying receiving grants and funding. (see article on Wikipedia.)

However, I want to use this saying in a different way unrelated to the above. I realized early in my preaching and teaching ministry that the moment I stepped away from the pulpit or classroom podium, almost everything I had said was lost forever! I had entrusted my spoken message to the fallible memories of my audience, and the vast majority of what was said would no longer be remembered even one week later! Those who said, “Great lesson, preacher” on Sunday morning could seldom remember the main points by Sunday night.

GOD’S NAMES

  1. Reveals His attributes and character
  2. “For His name’s sake” means He can always be counted on to act according to His names.

“THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD” – Psalm 23

  1. Shepherds have been part of the Bible story from the beginning: Abel, Abraham, Jacob, David, etc.
  2. Psalm 23 is a song by David, a shepherd who was chosen by Jehovah to become the Shepherd King over God’s people Israel.
  3. No doubt, David’s long experience as a shepherd led him to more fully understand how Jehovah was shepherding in all of his life.
    a. Someone has observed that sheep are more needy than many other domesticated animals
